Dr Avari explained the physiology of female reproductive organs and their functioning, provided detailed information about the process of menstruation, and dispelled associated superstitions and myths. His audio-visual presentation was followed by an interactive session with the audience.
Guest Lecture on ‘Disposal and Management of Waste’
On October 13, 2022, the IQAC organised a guest lecture on ‘Disposal and Management of Chemical and Other Waste’ (विविध प्रयोगशाळेत व इतरत्र निर्माण होणाऱ्या टाकाऊजन्य पदार्थांचे/रसायनांचे व्यवस्थापन) to help laboratory attendants and assistants to understand the proper procedures of disposing and managing different types of waste generated in the laboratory. The speaker was Ms. Seema Redkar (former Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Officer), who has done exemplary work in the field of waste management in India and abroad, in such countries as Netherlands, Norway and Israel. She is also the recipient of prestigious awards such as from the Government of Israel, the ‘Women Achievers Award’ from Mayor of Mumbai, and the Times Foundation Award.
The lecture aimed at assisting lab attendants and lab assistants, especially those newly recruited ones, to understand the best procedures for managing the different types of waste generated in the laboratories. Ms. Redkar explained the guidelines for waste management, and also discussed the various practices adopted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for this. She further discussed the small but effective ways for laboratory staff to safeguard themselves from diseases, such as regularly washing hands with soap, or using masks and gloves, and maintaining personal hygiene. She also emphasised the importance of segregating dry and wet waste in the laboratory, as also the disposal of liquid waste. Finally, Ms. Redkar spoke about the techniques and practices adopted worldwide for the effective management of waste.
NSS volunteers and Students of the Department of Sociology had prepared posters on the theme of environmental awareness, and this poster exhibition was inaugurated by Ms. Redkar, who appreciated the theme and spoke on the need for such an initiative.
The lecture was attended by nearly 60 Administrative Staff members (including laboratory staff), and they found the lecture highly beneficial.
