Seminar on “Women’s Empowerment and Entrepreneurship in the Modern World”
On February 24, 2023, the Departments of Microbiology, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics jointly organized a seminar on “Women’s Empowerment and Entrepreneurship in the Modern World”. The guest speaker was Ms.Parull Khanna, crowned Ms. India, Queen of the World Pageant, and who will soon be representing India on a global platform, and competing for the Ms. World title in USA in March 2023. She is also the Managing director of Studio 6 Jewels & Studio 6 Interiors.
Ms. Khanna shared her experiences at the Pageant and her life journey in general, and how she moved from being homemaker to an entrepreneur to a Ms. India candidate who will represent India on a Global platform. Her talk was followed by an interactive session.
At the end of the session, Ms. Parull’s team took photographs and recorded videos of good wishes for her future endeavours in USA. More than 110 Students attended the session, and they enjoyed it greatly.

Guest Lecture on “My Career Path: How do I decide?”
On February 27, 2023, a career guidance guest lecture on the theme, “My Career Path: How do I decide?”, was organised jointly by the Departments of Microbiology, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. The speaker was Dr. Surekha Zingde – Trustee of IWSA (Indian Women Scientists Association) and former Deputy Director of Cancer Research Institute ACTREC, Tata Memorial Centre.
Dr. Zingde spoke to Students on the importance of proper career planning and about the importance of following one’s interests. She emphasized the importance of prioritizing one’s wants and needs, and acknowledging one’s strengths and weaknesses. She also gave the Students examples of the career opportunities available in the fields of Microbiology, Biotechnology and Genetics.
The session was attended by nearly 60 Students and their feedback was highly positive.
Visit to UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences
The Departments of Microbiology, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics participated in an Open Day Visit at the UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences, at the Nalanda Building at the Vidyanagari Campus of the University of Mumbai. The group was met by Prof. Jacinta D’Souza, Chairperson, School of Biological Science.
The 29 Students and accompanying Faculty Members were divided into groups and then taken to visit the various Departments and laboratories and facilities of the Centre, such as the Plant Tissue Culture (PTC) lab, Epigenetics lab, Microbiology lab, Cancer – Genetics lab, Molecular biology lab, Media Preparation/Discard area, and Distillation Set Up. In addition, various research approaches and their outcomes were discussed. Finally, Students were taken to the Instrumentation Zone where they were shown real time instruments and their processing to analyse samples.
